Curriculum 1: Endourology Society
(16 Modules)
Coordinators: (Drs. Clayman, Gill, Denstedt, Smith, Badlani, Bagley and Lingeman)
The Education Leadership of the AUA in co-operation with the Endourology Society have created a setting that will allow individuals interested in a particular area of endourology to take all of the course offerings in that discipline. As such, at the 2008 AUA Annual Meeting, a urologist interested in ureteroscopy can take a series of courses directed at rigid ureteroscopy, flexible ureteroscopy and flexible ureteroscopy for treating urolithiasis (hands-on course). Similarly, if one has a strong interest in laparoscopy, the courses on principles of laparoscopy, basic laparoscopic suturing (hands-on course), laparoscopic complications and advanced laparoscopic oncology are all given at separate times. For percutaneous stone removal, there is both a hands-on course on how to do a percutaneous nephrostomy complimented by an in-depth didactic course on percutaneous stone removal.
With each passing year and with the feedback provided to us by the membership, these curricula-based "ring" of courses will change, but the concept of the "ring" will remain intact. As such, attendees at the Annual Meeting will always have the ability to focus in a given area and be exposed to an educational experience that spans a given field from "beginning to end." This powerful paradigm, by combining both hands-on and didactic experiences, provides attendees with a hitherto unprecedented opportunity to further hone "old skills" while gaining "new skills." The Endourology Society is thankful to the late Dr. Segura and to Dr. Preminger for their vision and commitment to bringing to each of us, a more meaningful and directed educational experience. It is only through the unfettered and creative transfer of knowledge that our specialty moves forward. Within the courage to change, lie the seeds for our progress.
