Curriculum 3: Ultrasound
(4 Modules)
Coordinator: Pat Fulgham, MD

Ultrasound is an integral part of urologic practice. Urologists performing ultrasound examinations and ultrasound-guided procedures must be familiar with the principles of ultrasound physics, and the indications for and limitations of the ultrasound examinations. The urologist must possess the technical skills to operate the equipment and obtain meaningful images. Patient safety and documentation are critical elements of urologist-performed ultrasound.

A skills-oriented curriculum has been designed to meet these needs. A course on Basic Ultrasound is now offered on DVD with on-line testing via the AUA web site. Physicians are strongly encouraged to complete the Basic Ultrasound Module prior to taking one or more of the Advanced Modules. Even those practitioners who are familiar with ultrasound will benefit by review of the technical, clinical and safety aspects of the subject presented in the Basic Ultrasound Module.

Clinically-oriented Advanced Modules in Abdominal, Male Genitalia, Prostate and Intra-operative ultrasound including hands-on training are offered. Each of these modules will focus specifically on the intellectual and technical skills necessary to use ultrasound in urologic practice.
